spltends (pronounced “split ends”) is a collection of stories highlighting the experience of one first-generation Dominican-American as she forges and celebrates her unique identity while navigating the demands of the two worlds. From conversations surrounding tradition to everyday things like love, language, and everyone’s favorite - faith, the views between the two are often opposing but in many ways shared.
With each new story tension is unearthed, explored, and dismantled revealing cause for celebration and mourning. This space was created to loosen the ties on otherwise tightly wound standards and expectations imposed on a first generation. It exists for healing, for expression, and for the ultimate freedom of its subject.

My name is Cindy. I am the writer and creator behind spltends. This baby is one I’ve nursed for longer than I care to admit. It is a collection of personal stories that follow my journey through the discovery and forging of identity despite the forces that would pressure me to abandon or assimilate as a first-generation Dominican-American.
Originally from NYC, I currently reside in Atlanta with my husband and daughter. When I’m not writing, I’m overthinking. I’ve been telling stories for as long as I can remember. It’s a practice that has carried me through my career and continues to feed my soul. I hope this space makes room for your story, gives way to some good laughs, and reassures that you are far from alone in your other-ly experience.
